Mainz 05 secured their first Bundesliga victory of the season with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach at the Veltins-Arena on Saturday.
The match was tightly contested from start to finish, with both sides creating chances but failing to find the back of the net until the 74th minute when Mainz's Lee Jae-sung scored his first goal for the club since joining in January.
Just three minutes later, Mainz's substitute Barreiro completed his brace by scoring his first league goal for the club, adding further pressure on Gladbach's defence.
The victory was Mainz's second in four matches this season, while it was Gladbach's third defeat in as many games. The result leaves them sitting just one point above the relegation zone, with only two wins in 18 matches.
For Mainz, the win was a much-needed boost after a run of poor form which saw them drop points against teams like Schalke and Hertha Berlin. The win also gave coach Oliver Glasner some breathing space ahead of the international break, as he looks to get his side back into the hunt for a top-four spot in the table.
Overall, it was a solid performance from Mainz, who showed resilience and determination throughout the match. They will now look to build on this victory and continue to push for a place among the top teams in the league.
